Sort sol (in Danish) or the black sun is a phenomenon. In Denmark it takes place in particular near Tønder and Ribe. During the Spring and Autumn migration periods starlings are flying back and forth between the Southern and Northern Europe creating huge formations in the sky just before they decide for a location to roost for the night. Due to the vast amount of individuals per flock, starlings tend to fade out the sunlight by their swirling, ballet-dancing flow. We were inspired by this beautiful phenomenon to recreate this only by making people do it. So we constructed an art piece, that was consisting of a piece of white transparent fabric. This fabric hang from the ceiling and the ordinance would manipulate the fabric by pulling the stings. The result was a recreation of the beautiful flow that the birds are able to create.
