"Seashell of Social Media" is an interactive sculpture built by cubes of Styrofoam giving it a pixilated look. The sculpture is a visualization of people’s communication through Facebook’s newsfeed. Combining the components of digital communication with an object from the sea does this. The seashell works as a path of communication between transmitter and receiver. It is possible to both listen and talk into it.

The idea comes from the folklore saying that the ocean is heard in a seashell. However, studies conclude that it is actually the ambient noise of the listener’s surroundings that is heard. "Seashell of Social Media"gives the noise of the listener’s surroundings as well but this noise comes from different status updates. The sculpture works by recording and playing status updates made by the spectators. The spectator says an update into one of the three tubercles, which will be recorded and afterwards played with other updates. Six different recordings will be played at the same time, giving the impression of an ocean of voices.
