“Cranked” was a kinetic machine that gave an output without any political or societal implications - it was non-symbolic. In this sense, our machine could be categorized as a 21st century interactive art piece. The idea of creating a familiar scenery from everyday life to attract attention has been used since happenings in the 1960’s, and it was used in our contemporary piece. By using machinery that was well-known from industrialism of engineering, e.g. cogwheels and a crank, and an output based on a common activity, we hoped that people were easily captivated by recognizable details. This allowed spectators, without the necessity for background information, to determine the action they were to take. With our machine, the person who decided to crank it, not only became a participant, but also the controller of the process.

With “Cranked”, interaction was a main factor. We built the machine to attract spectators’ attention and transform it into using the piece. For the outcome we expected the participants to have a whimsical experience.
