“The Wave” is created solely from waste materials with polystyrene being the main resource. Polystyrene along with plastic and other various manmade materials is one of the biggest dangers to ocean pollution, so during the development of the concept it seemed obvious for us to use this material.

We are aware that by creating a symbol of the ocean that evokes connotations of strength, continuity and religion to many, made from one of the biggest culprits of water pollution, we put the problem on a knives edge. This may provoke some people to engage in the debate, and may just seem aesthetically pleasing to others. Any kind of response is accepted and legitimate to us, as long as the spectators feel like they walk away with an experience.

By the means of motion sensors located within the structure, The Wave reacts to spectators walking around it by lighting various light sources and activating sounds from within the core of The Wave. These effects and their timing are designed to give the spectators the optimal experience and understanding of the message we are sending.
