HOW GAME DESIGN CAN TEACH US ABOUT URBAN SCALES

Bird’s-eye views created by big data maps vs. street-level experience of the smart citizen: two complementary aspects of urban life. Yet they are more than two different scales of observation. They seem to constitute two parallel and impermeable realms of the urban. How can urban game design strategies introduce the bigger picture into urban experience and create experience that enables discoveries in the bigger patterns?

Dr. Viktor Bedö is urban game designer, philosopher and design thinker based in Berlin. He is founder of Tacit Dimension, an independent research project which develops games that map urban dynamics and prototype urban design concepts. His PhD thesis in Philosophy is on interactive urban maps as instruments of thinking. He is lecturer and coach in the team-based innovation process Design Thinking. He is co-founder and former member of the street-games collective Invisible Playground.
